Fuel Switching & Bill Expectations

When you switch from a gas furnace to a heat pump, your energy costs shift between utilities.

What to Expect

• Gas usage will drop significantly (often close to zero for heating)
• Electricity usage will increase, especially during winter
• Your winter electric bill may be higher than you’re used to

This is normal. Your heat pump now uses electricity to move heat instead of burning gas to create it. Longer heating cycles in cold weather increase electricity use, but this does not mean your system is inefficient or malfunctioning.

Look at Total Energy Costs

It’s important to compare your total combined gas + electricity costs over the full year, not just one winter month. Many homeowners see:
